Takoma, located in Washington D.C. a district located in the northwest quadrant of the District, it is part of Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4B in its fourth ward. Takoma Park, Maryland is situated on its border. Takoma shares its origins with the city of Maryland, which is bordered by Tacoma Park along Eastern Avenue. Benjamin Franklin Gilbert developed Takoma Park, a commuter suburb located on the Metropolitan Branch of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad line, in 1883. The Seventh-day Adventist Church was invited by Gilbert to establish a publishing house and world headquarters in Takoma Park.

 By establishing their hospital and college in Takoma Park, Maryland, they fostered a reputation for vegetarianism and "clean living" that was not tied to the urban swamps. Takoma,  Was initially considered the commercial center of the entire vicinity before the development of Silver Spring, Maryland, which included numerous shops and industrial structures in the area now occupied by the Metro station. The Historic District of Takoma Park includes its commercial core. The District of Columbia Public Library manages the Takoma Park Neighborhood Library. The initial public library in Washington, was established. Carnegie Library and. Takoma Park has only one graduate university, which is Washington Adventist University, previously known as Columbia Union College, that was closed in 2010.
