Good Hope was the first permanent, modern settlement of this size located in Southeast Washington.Nacotchtank Native Americans were the first inhabitants to live in the area that is now called Good Hope, living and fishing on the adjacent Anacostia River. Captain John Smith was the first European to explore the area during 1612 C.E., giving the river the name of the "Nacotchtank". Disease and war devastated the Nacochtank and, in the final 25 years of the 17th century, the tribe disintegrated as a functioning unit, and its remaining members joined along with nearby piscataway Indian tribes.Good hope was only a crossing point however. The communities were still separated from each other, and a large portion of the area between them was left undeveloped before World War II. The repressive demand for housing during the war, caused by the huge influx of federal workers to Washington and the surrounding areas, led to the extensive growth that took place in Southeast Washington and the linking of Good Hope with other parts of southeast D.C.
